Nearly 8,000 miles apart, faculty and students from Saint Mary’s and De La Salle University—Dasmariñas in the Philippines are collaborating on plant research. As part of a Saint Mary’s University Collaborative Lasallian Research Grant, Dr. Jeanne Minnerath and Bridget Pethke, a senior biology pre-physical therapy major, are studying native plants of the Philippines and their anti-microbial activity.
In late May, Dr. Minnerath and Pethke traveled to the Philippines to meet their educational partners and students, and spent time learning their lab procedures. The two also visited the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute. Throughout the summer, Philippines students collected plants, extracted chemicals, and shipped them to Saint Mary’s, where Dr. Minnerath and Pethke tested their anti-microbial potential.
